Dynamic Duopoly Competition with Switching Costs and Network Externalities

چکیده
This paper analyzes competition in a two-period differentiated-products duopoly in the presence of both switching costs and network effects. Consumers are assumed to have rational expectation about network sizes, and future prices. The equilibrium prices in both periods are lower than markets with just switching costs and they decrease with the magnitude of network effects. Hence, in any period they might fall below the price level in a market without switching costs and network effects. ∗We would like to thank Volkswagen Stiftung for the generous financial support which made this research possible. How do Switching Costs A¤ect Market Concentration and Prices in Network Industries?
I investigate the e¤ects of switching costs on the market outcome in network industries using a dynamic duopoly model of price competition in the presence of an outside option. I nd that the role of switching costs depends on network e¤ects and the outside option. Without a viable outside option, high switching costs can neutralize the tendency towards high market concentration associated with...
متن کاملCentralized Supply Chain Network Ddesign: Monopoly, Duopoly, and Ooligopoly Competitions under Uncertainty
This paper presents a competitive supply chain network design problem in which one, two, or three supply chains are planning to enter the price-dependent markets simultaneously in uncertain environments and decide to set the prices and shape their networks. The chains produce competitive products either identical or highly substitutable. Fuzzy multi-level mixed integer programming is used to mo...
متن کاملBertrand-nash Equilibrium in the Retail Duopoly Model under Asymmetric Costs
In this paper, the Bertrand's price competition in the retail duopoly with asymmetric costs is analyzed. Retailers sell substitute products in the framework of the classical economic order quantity (EOQ) model with linear demand function. The market potential and competitor price are considered to be the bifurcation parameters of retailers. Levels of the barriers to market penetration depending...
متن کاملReimbursing Consumers’ Switching Costs in Network Industries
This paper investigates firms’ decisions to reimburse consumers’ switching costs in network industries. Prior literature finds that switching costs incentivize firms to harvest their locked-in consumers rather than price aggressively for market dominance, thereby resulting in a lower market concentration. Using a dynamic duopoly model, we show that this result is reversed if firms have the opti...
متن کاملMunich Personal RePEc Archive Menu Costs and Dynamic Duopoly
Examining a state-dependent pricing model in the presence of menu costs and dynamic duopolistic interactions, this paper claims that the assumption regarding market structure is crucial for identifying the menu costs for price changes. Prices in a dynamic duopolistic market can be more rigid than those in more competitive markets, such as a monopolistic-competition market. Therefore, the estima...
